#IC21 Speaker Spotlight: Mark Carney, Former Bank Governor and Brookfield’s New Head of Impact Investing

On Tuesday, June 8, Invest Canada ’21 is pleased to welcome featured speaker Mark Carney. Carney is Vice Chairman and Head of Impact Investing at Brookfield Asset Management and the former Governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England.
Carney is a long-time and well-known advocate for sustainability, specifically the management and reduction of climate risks. In Carney’s new role, he will be focusing on the development of products for investors that will combine positive social and environmental outcomes with strong risk-adjusted returns.
Coming from serving as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, Carney will take the IC21 virtual stage for a candid discussion with Senia Rapisarda, Managing Director, HarbourVest Partners (Canada), on values, markets, and how private capital & innovation can make Canada a role model in leadership and sustainability for the next decade.
Carney’s term as Governor of the Bank of England ended in 2020, and he was also Chairman of the Financial Stability Board from 2011 to 2018. Prior to his governorships, Carney worked at Goldman Sachs as well as the Canadian Department of Finance.
On March 16, Carney published a new book that went on to be a national bestseller. Value(s): Building a Better World for All, is described as “an argument […] on the radical, foundational change that is required if we are to build an economy and society based not on market values but on human values.”
Carney is also an external member of the Board of Stripe, a San Francisco-headquartered global tech company focused on building economic infrastructure for the internet. He is also a member of the Global Advisory Board of Pacific Investment Management Company, LLC (PIMCO), the group of Thirty, the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum (WEF), as well as Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Hoffman Institute or Global Business and Society at Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires (INSEAD).
The session at Invest Canada will be just one of 18 content sessions at the conference following seven days of networking for the 600+ attendees. The conference also features a Masterclass and a complimentary wine tasting with a world-renowned winemaker.
