#IC20 Speaker Spotlight: Bill Browder, Putin’s Public Enemy # 1

Updated Bill Browder for Central 02 1024x576

On Tuesday June 16, Invest Canada 20 ONLINE is pleased to welcome featured speaker Bill Browder. Browder is the CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management, advisor to the Hermitage Fund, which was the largest foreign investor in Russia until 2005.

In 2005, Browder was denied entry to Russia for exposing corruption in state-owned companies. In 2009, Browder published the bestselling memoir Red Notice, which details his experience in Russia and his ongoing fight for justice for Sergei Magnitsky.

In 2009 Browder’s Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was killed in a Moscow prison after uncovering and exposing a USD $230 million fraud committed by Russian government officials. Browder has spent close to a decade conducting an international push to enforce visa bans and asset freezes on individual human rights abusers, particularly those who played a role in Magnitsky’s arrest, torture, and death. Since the Magnitsky Act passed, the Russian government has charged Browder with various crimes and has tried to file warrants for his arrest through Interpol.

The Magnitsky Act has been the centre of the political spectacle in the U.S. since 2016 when in July of that year, a Russian attorney named Natalia Veselnitskaya met with Donald Trump Jr., President Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The participating parties had all maintained that the topic of the meeting was the adoption of Russian children.” It was later revealed by the Russian attorney that she talked mostly about Browder, a disappointing topic change for the President’s team.

In July 2018, Browder’s name was brought up by the Russian President during an infamous press conference with U.S. President in Helsinki, Finland. It was during that press conference that President Putin claimed that Browder’s business associates had earned more than $1.5 billion in Russia and never paid any taxes,” and also asserted that Browder had donated USD $400 million to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential bid. Browder has repeatedly vehemently refuted this claim.
